Group Mime: Character Command

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Character command

This is an imaginative drama activity where children use their bodies and faces to show emotions without speaking.

By miming different feelings, they explore how physical expression communicates mood and intention, helping them understand both themselves and others.

How to play

1. Introduction

Explain that our bodies are powerful tools for showing how we feel. Ask if anyone has a pet and how they can tell what it is feeling, guiding the children to notice that animals communicate through body language.

2. Stand up and prepare

Ask everyone to stand up and get ready to use their whole body to express emotions.

3. Call out emotions

Begin calling out emotions for the group to mime together, such as happy, sad, angry, grateful, hurt, worried or anxious.

4. Encourage physical expression

Remind children to use clear, committed body movements and facial expressions, without talking.

5. Repeat and explore

Continue with a range of emotions, watching how different people communicate different feelings.

What it teaches

  • Physical expression
  • Empathy
  • Observation skills

Variations to try

  • Invite one child to lead and call out the emotions.
  • Compare subtle emotions with very bold ones.
