In this activity, the group counts from 1 to 10 together, experimenting with different voice levels, quiet, medium and projected, to discover how to use their voices safely and effectively.
Along the way, they explore when each level might be useful and practise finding a strong, clear stage voice without straining.
1. Count to 10 together
Ask the group to count from 1 to 10 in unison at a natural, comfortable volume.
2. Introduce the voice levels
Explain that the next time they count, they will use different volumes:
3. Discuss the difference
Ask when they might use each voice level (e.g. whispering to a friend, answering in class, performing on stage).
4. Projection vs shouting
Talk about how shouting strains the throat, but projection comes from deeper in the body - 'from the tummy.' Encourage children to notice how it feels different.
This is a simple yet highly effective vocal warm-up. It gives children a physical sense of projection and helps prevent the common mistake of confusing projection with shouting.
