Trust Circle

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Trust circle

This carefully supervised trust exercise allows children to experience being supported by a group.

By taking turns to trust and to support, children develop awareness, responsibility and respect for one another.

Child smilling in drama class

How to play

1. Create a circle

Divide the children into groups of around six.

One child stands in the centre of the circle. The other children form a circle around them, placing two hands gently but firmly on the centre child to provide support.

2. Lean backwards

Explain that the centre child must stand tall and firm, keeping their body straight like a plank of wood.

When the centre child is ready, they close their eyes and gently lean backwards.

The supporting children carefully pass the centre child's weight around and across the circle, keeping them safe at all times.

3. Swap roles

After a short period, the group gently guides the child back to an upright position in the centre.

Swap roles so different children have the opportunity to be in the middle.

What it teaches

  • Trust and mutual responsibility
  • Physical awareness and control
  • Cooperation and teamwork
  • Focus and calm concentration
  • Responsible decision-making by prioritising safety and group awareness

Variations to try

  • Increase or decrease the size of the circle
  • Allow the centre child to choose when to lean
  • Add a calm count to control the movement

Principal's notes

Ensure you supervise closely and that all children understand their role in keeping the centre child-safe. Emphasise slow, controlled movement and clear communication at all times.
