Improvisation Freeze

Perform 7-12 child
Child development / Drama games / Improvisation freeze

This lively game helps children practise starting scenes, making bold physical choices and improvising in character.

It encourages risk-taking and quick thinking while building confidence and creativity in performance.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Start the scene

Two children step into the centre and begin an improvised scene with no preparation. Encourage bold shapes, strong physical positions and unusual choices.

2. Freeze the action

At any point, the teacher shouts "FREEZE!". The actors must freeze exactly as they are.

3. Tap in and continue

A new child taps one of the frozen actors out, takes their exact position and begins a brand-new scene. Repeat several times with different children to keep the energy high and the ideas fresh.

What it teaches

  • Creative thinking
  • spatial awareness
  • Physical storytelling
  • Spontaneous acting

Variations to try

  • Limit scene settings (e.g. only at sea, only on the moon)
  • Have the class suggest opening lines or characters

Principal's notes

This game is ideal for building performance confidence. Encourage children to freeze in clear, expressive positions - it gives the next actor a jumping-off point.
