It encourages them to collaborate silently, think creatively and communicate entirely through their bodies, developing teamwork, non-verbal storytelling and focus in a playful, dramatic way.
Children also practise planning, timing and presenting as a group while the rest of the class guesses their machine.
1. Form teams
Divide the children into small teams of 3 to 5 children.
2. Explain the task
Each team must create a machine using only their bodies. No words or sounds are allowed - just mime and movement!
Machines the children can create could be a washing machine, blender, car engine, clock, printer, coffee machine, vacuum cleaner or wind turbine.
3. Planning time
Give each group a few minutes to plan how their machine will work, with each child acting as a different moving part.
4. Present and guess
One team at a time presents their machine while the rest of the class guesses what it is!
This one never fails to get giggles and gasps. It's a fantastic introduction to physical theatre and teamwork in a playful, low-pressure way.
