This fun improvisation game encourages storytelling and creative thinking.

Why Are You Late? helps children work as a team while building performance and observational skills.

It also develops quick thinking and imaginative problem-solving.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Set the roles

Choose one child as the "boss" sitting at a desk. Another child is the "employee" and waits outside the room.

The rest of the group invents a silly reason for the employee being late. For instance: "He had to chase his parrot, who stole his trousers and joined a circus."

2. Act it out

The employee returns, apologising profusely. The boss demands to know why they are late. As the employee explains, the group silently acts out the true reason behind the story.

3. Guess the story

The employee watches and tries to piece together the story aloud. If they get close, the group gives a thumbs-up. If not, the miming continues until the story is guessed.

What it teaches

  • Improvisation
  • Observation
  • Mime and narrative structure

Variations to try

  • Have two employees guess the reason together.
  • Turn the scene into a sketch and perform it later.
