Traffic Lights

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Traffic lights

This movement and listening game helps younger children learn how to control their bodies in space.

By responding to simple signals, children practise stopping, starting and noticing others around them.

How to play

1. Set up the room

Ask the children to spread out around the room so everyone has their own space. Explain that they are going to move around the room like traffic.

2. Call out the commands

Call out:

  • Green - walk around the room
  • Amber - slow down
  • Red - stop and freeze

3. Keep the colours changing

Encourage children to watch where they are going and avoid bumping into others.

Change the colours frequently to keep the group alert.

After a few rounds, invite a child to help call out the colours.

What it teaches

  • Awareness of space and others
  • Listening and response
  • Control and coordination
  • Focus and patience
  • Responsible decision-making by choosing when to move and when to stop

Variations to try

  • Add sounds for each colour
  • Change the type of movement on green
  • Introduce a countdown before stopping
  • Add a freeze pose when stopping

Principal's notes

Keep instructions clear and energetic. Praise children for moving safely and being aware of others. This game works particularly well as an early warm-up or focus reset for younger groups.
