By sharing something new they would like to try, children practise expressing ideas clearly while recognising that trying new things can lead to positive experiences.
1. Chat about trying new things
Begin by explaining the importance of having the confidence to try something new.
Explain that it could be a new activity, a new food or a new experience.
Share a personal example of a time you tried something new and how it made you feel, such as discovering a favourite food or making new friends by trying a new club or sport.
2. Ask the children to contribute
Invite the children to share any similar experiences if they wish.
Ask the children to think quietly about something new they would like to try.
3. Share ideas
Sit or stand in a circle. Go around the circle and ask each child to complete the sentence:
"Something new I want to try is..."
Encourage children to use a full sentence and speak clearly.
This activity works particularly well as a calm end-of-class reflection or confidence check-in.
