Children in drama class

This observation and awareness game helps children build a mental map of the space around them.

By recalling where objects and people are positioned, children strengthen spatial memory and stage awareness.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Wander around the room

Ask the children to walk around the room, taking in as much as they can.

Explain that being spatially aware means knowing where other people are and understanding what is in the space around you.

2. Freeze

After about 30 seconds, ask the children to freeze and close their eyes.

Call out an object, such as the clock or the door, and ask them to point towards it. Ask them to open their eyes and check whether they were correct.

3. Repeat

Repeat several times, gradually making the challenge harder by:

  • Choosing smaller objects
  • Asking them to point to where another child is standing

What it teaches

  • Spatial memory
  • Observation skills
  • Focus and stillness
  • Awareness of others
  • Responsible decision-making by noticing and remembering surroundings

Variations to try

  • Ask children to point using a body part instead of a hand
  • Add directional language, such as left or right
  • Turn it into a silent challenge

Principal's notes

Encourage children to take their time noticing the space before freezing. This game is particularly useful for developing stage awareness and orientation.
