Popcorn

Perform 7-12 child

Popcorn is a high-energy group challenge that keeps everyone on their toes!

It sparks laughter and excitement while testing focus, listening and timing.

Children must work together in perfect rhythm to get the whole group standing without a single mistake.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Start crouched down

Ask the whole group to crouch quietly on the floor.

2. Begin the popping

One child stands and says, "Pop".

Another child follows by standing and saying "Corn".

3. Keep the rhythm

The group continues in this alternating pattern: one says "Pop", the next says "Corn", and so on.

The goal is to get the entire class standing in sequence without anyone speaking at the same time.

4. Back to the start if...

If two children speak together, the whole class crouches back down and starts again from the beginning!

What it teaches

  • Turn-taking and patience
  • Careful listening
  • Group rhythm and timing
  • Non-verbal ensemble awareness

Variations to try

  • Try a "Popcorn remix" using different food pairings (e.g. "Fish" - "Chips")
  • Use other actions with the words (e.g. jump on "Pop", spin on "Corn")
  • See how fast or slow the group can complete the sequence

Principal's notes

A deceptively simple activity that's brilliant for concentration. It's also a great reset game if the energy is getting too wild - it demands quiet, calm teamwork.
