Stage Picture Trust

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Stage picture trust

This ensemble trust exercise focuses on stillness, awareness and shared responsibility when creating stage pictures.

Children learn to trust that others will hold their positions, allowing everyone to commit fully without checking or adjusting.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Create frozen stage pictures

Ask the children to spread out around the space.

Explain that you will count down from five and everyone must create a frozen stage picture using their body.

2. Trust the group

Once frozen, tell the group that they must hold their shape without looking around or adjusting.

Explain that they are trusting the rest of the group to also stay committed.

3. Repeat

After several seconds, release the freeze.

Repeat the exercise, encouraging stronger, clearer shapes.

You can also create linked stage pictures by asking children to connect shapes or face the same direction without talking.

What it teaches

  • Trust in the ensemble
  • Commitment to physical choices
  • Stillness and focus
  • Stage awareness
  • Responsible decision-making by holding a choice for the benefit of the group

Principal's notes

Encourage children to commit fully to their shape rather than checking what others are doing. This game is particularly useful for improving confidence in freezes, tableaux and stage pictures. Use it to reinforce how trust allows performers to stay present and grounded on stage.
