Mindful Counting

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Mindful counting

This calming mindfulness exercise helps children become more aware of their senses and the world around them

By focusing attention on what they can see, hear, feel, smell, and taste, children practise grounding themselves and developing calm concentration.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Discuss what the senses are

Begin by asking the children how many senses they think we have. Invite them to name the senses together.

2. Keep still and focus

Explain that one way to stay calm and focused is to be mindful of the space around us.

Ask the children to sit down comfortably and quietly, keeping their bodies still.

3. Observe

Guide them to slowly look around the room and, in their own minds, identify:

  • Five things they can see
  • Four things they can hear
  • Three things they can touch
  • Two things they can smell
  • One thing they can taste

4. Focus on the senses

Encourage the children to take their time and focus gently on each sense without rushing.

Remind them that this is a quiet, personal activity and there are no right or wrong answers.

What it teaches

  • Mindfulness and calm focus
  • Sensory awareness
  • Emotional regulation
  • Concentration and stillness
  • Self-awareness
