Child development / Drama games / Robin hood says

A fun take on "Simon Says", this game is a listening and movement game where children must stay alert while taking on the role of Robin Hood's Merry Men.

By responding only to the correct verbal cue, children practise focus, self-control and careful listening within an imaginative adventure.

Child smilling in drama class

How to play

1. Set the story

Explain to the children that Robin Hood is training new Merry Men and only those who listen carefully will succeed.

2. Explain the rule

Tell the children they must only follow instructions that begin with the phrase, "Robin Hood says..."

If the instruction does not start this way, they must freeze completely and not move at all.

3. Call the commands

Call out a range of themed actions, such as creeping quietly through the forest, hiding behind trees, shooting an arrow or listening carefully for the Sheriff.

4. Catch the spies

If a child moves when they should not, explain that they have become a Sheriff's spy and must sit and watch quietly until the next round begins.

5. Continue the training

Keep the pace varied and playful, encouraging careful listening as the Merry Men complete their training.

What it teaches

  • Listening and concentration
  • Self-control
  • Following instructions
  • Imaginative engagement

Principal's notes

This is a simple game yet very effective for focusing on following instructions. Keep the pace lively and playful. Reinforce the story throughout to maintain focus and excitement, and regularly reset the game so all children remain included and motivated.
