Follow the Voice

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Follow the voice

This listening and focus-based trust game challenges children to follow verbal instructions carefully.

By relying on a leader's voice, they develop concentration, trust and spatial awareness.

The activity also strengthens listening skills, encourages accurate instruction-following and supports responsible decision-making.

How to play

1. Create an obstacle course

Place several objects, such as chairs, around the room to create obstacles. Choose one child to take part.

2. Pop on the blindfold

Blindfold the child or ask them to close their eyes. Explain that they must listen carefully to your voice and follow instructions exactly.

3. Instruct

Give clear, calm directions such as:

  • "Take ten steps forward"
  • "Turn to your left"
  • "Take three small steps"

The rest of the group watches quietly.

Once the child has successfully navigated the space, stop the activity and choose another child.

What it teaches

  • Listening and concentration
  • Trust and confidence
  • Spatial awareness
  • Control and patience
  • Responsible decision-making by responding carefully to guidance

Variations to try

  • Allow another child to give the instructions under supervision
  • Reduce or increase the number of obstacles
  • Introduce distance challenges

Principal's notes

Ensure the space is safe and instructions are clear and calm. This game works best when the rest of the group remains silent and focused!
