Emotional Walks

Perform 7-12 child
Child development / Drama games / Emotional walks

The Emotion Walk game builds self-awareness and confidence in non-verbal acting skills.

It is a physical improvisation game that helps children explore expression through movement, body language and facial cues.

This game is ideal for character development and strengthening ensemble connection.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Start solo

Ask the children to move freely around the space.

Call out different emotions or character traits for them to embody through their walk, gestures and expressions.

Keep the noise level low so your instructions can be heard clearly.

2. Add interaction

Once children are confident working alone, instruct them to begin interacting silently with others while staying in their chosen emotion.

3. Need ideas? Possible emotions to call out include:

Happy, sad, tired, excited, confused, jittery, peaceful, alarmed, sleepy, lost, curious, bossy, scared, dreamy, angry, cheerful, organised, sneaky, uptight, amused, loving, joyful, crazy, clever, bold, depressed, aggressive, shy and proud.

What it teaches

  • Emotional literacy and expression
  • Body awareness and control
  • Character development
  • Group awareness and spatial awareness

Variations to try

  • Freeze-frame moment: Call "freeze!" and ask who can guess which emotion others are showing
  • Partner reflection: Ask children to mirror or react to another person's emotional state

Principal's notes

This activity is a brilliant warm-up for character exploration and storytelling. It gets everyone moving and expressing without needing any words at all.
