By giving thoughtful compliments and responding positively, they build confidence, kindness and respectful communication skills.
1. Discuss compliments
Ask your child if they know what a compliment is.
Talk about how compliments can make people feel appreciated and valued.
2. Encourage thoughtful compliments
Explain that compliments can focus on:
rather than only appearance.
3. Think of a compliment
Ask your child to think of something kind to say about someone they know.
4. Share aloud
Encourage your child to say the compliment clearly and explain why they chose it.
5. Practice gratitude
Take turns giving each other compliments and practice responding with:
"Thank you."
This activity can have a very positive emotional impact on the group because children feel seen and appreciated. Encourage sincere compliments and help children move beyond simple appearance-based comments where possible.
