Character/Object/Location

Perform 7-12 child
Child development / Drama games / Character object location

This spontaneous improvisation game challenges children to create a scene using specific ingredients.

By combining a character, an object and a location, children practise quick thinking, creativity and committing to an idea without preparation.

Child acting in drama class

How to play

1. Choose three children

Explain that this is a spontaneous improvisation challenge. Then, choose three children to perform.

2. Explain the game

Give them one character, one object and one location.

Examples might include:

  • Old lady, ice cream, beach
  • Angry man, wallet, bus stop

Explain that they must create a scene that includes all three elements.

3. Count down

Count down clearly. The performers then begin improvising immediately, without discussion or preparation.

4. Repeat

Allow the scene to run for a short, set amount of time before stopping.

Choose new performers and repeat.

What it teaches

  • Spontaneous improvisation
  • Creativity under pressure
  • Commitment to character
  • Listening and responding
  • Responsible decision-making by including all given elements

Variations to try

  • Add a genre or emotion
  • Reduce the number of performers
  • Increase the time limit slightly
  • Allow the audience to suggest the elements

Principal's notes

Keep scenes short to maintain energy and confidence. Encourage performers to accept the ideas given rather than resisting them. This game works particularly well for building confidence in unprepared performance.
