This summer term our 7-12-year-olds are diving into Rome 'n Jewels, our unique and age-appropriate spin on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, focusing on friendship, loyalty and the power of making your own choices. In our version romantic love is swapped for friendship and the classic family feud between the Montagues and Capulets takes place as a light-hearted rivalry between vampires and werewolves. This thrilling and fictional setting helps us explore deeper themes like empathy and independent thinking in a child-friendly way.
Instead of the tragedy and death that Romeo & Juliet is known for, our script concludes with unity and resolution and a positive ending. It's about friendship, bravery and choosing peace over conflict.
A highlight of rehearsals will be the choreographed stage combat routines. Working in pairs and small groups they'll develop trust and understand the importance of safety and cooperation on stage. It's an empowering skill that helps build confidence and collaboration and one that they love learning.
Rome 'n Jewels gives children a taste of one of Shakespeare's best-known stories, adapted with humour, heart and age-appropriate content. Set on the modern-day streets of London, this show explodes with street dance moves and cool hip-hop sounds, including the howl-tastic dance routine hit Vamp It Up.
Will the friendship between Rome and Jewels resolve the vampire and werewolf feud and bring harmony back to the urban underworld? Find out this summer term.
