Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of my favourite childhood tales and I am delighted to bring the exciting world of Wonderland to Perform this summer break.
We've had plenty of fun recording original music for the show at Perform HQ over the last few weeks. My favourite tracks are I'm Late and Off With His Head - they've been stuck in my head all week and I apologise in advance for the same happening to you when the children come home singing!
This year is also the 160th anniversary of the novel (can you believe it was published in 1865?) and there are quite a few events around London and the UK celebrating Alice this year.
Happily coinciding with our holiday course, here are a few ways to celebrate Alice over the summer holidays.
Perform's Alice in Wonderland summer holiday course | Throughout July and August
The best way to introduce your child to the exciting and curious world of Wonderland is through our Alice in Wonderland summer holiday course.
Our theatre professionals bring the tale to life through games and exercises that also work to build confidence and boost concentration.
On the final day of the course, the children showcase Alice in Wonderland for friends and family in their vibrant costumes, singing along to our original soundtrack. It's always a special few days and the children go home with big smiles on their faces.
Theatre on Kew | 19th July - 31st August
I absolutely love how London embraces outdoor theatre during the warmer months.
A show on my list for the summer is Theatre on Kew's Alice production, an interactive, outdoor theatre set in the breathtaking Kew Gardens. I can't wait to see this with my family on a sunny day.
Alice's Day in Oxford | 5th July
Since the story of Alice originated in Oxford, it's only fitting to celebrate at the city's annual Alice's Day festival. On 5th July, the city will transform into a Wonderland with art trails, tours and games, face painting and more.
A tidbit for you - this day celebrates the day Charles Dodgson (pen name Lewis Carroll) took the Dean of Christ Church's three daughters - Lorina, Alice, and Edith - on a picnic in Oxford and made up the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. He later wrote the story down for the girls and, luckily, published it for us all to enjoy.
The Royal Ballet & Opera | 13th - 28th June
The Royal Ballet is adapting Alice in Wonderland this June and has described it as a family ballet with colourful costumes, impressive stage effects and dazzling choreography that'll excite family members of all ages.
I cannot wait to see how choreographer Christopher Wheeldon brings to life Alice falling down the hole, meeting the Mad Hatter at the tea party and visiting the Queen of Hearts' castle.
Marylebone Theatre | 12th July - 31st August
Rain or shine, a magical theatre production in the heart of London is always a great option when looking for things to do this summer.
Marylebone Theatre is showcasing Alice in Wonderland over July and August and is suitable for children aged 5 and up, featuring puppets, costumes and catchy music.
The Athenæum Warminster | 17th - 19th July
For those in or around Wiltshire, the county's oldest theatre, The Athenæum, is putting on a reimagined telling of Alice over three days this July. The evening performance has been classified PG, making it a great choice for families with older children. With its historic setting and fresh take on a classic tale, it promises to be a memorable night out.
