The Sun Shines On...

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / The sun shines on

This lively circle game encourages quick thinking, awareness of others, and shared fun.

Children practise listening carefully and responding to information about themselves and the group.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Set up the game

Ask the children to take a chair and form a circle. You will need one more chair than the number of players.

Choose one person, or yourself, to stand in the middle of the circle without a chair.

2. Finish the sentence

The person in the middle thinks of something that many people in the group might have in common, such as hair colour, age, or clothing.

They say, "The sun shines on everyone who..." and finish the sentence, for example, "...has brown hair" or "...is wearing their Perform T-shirt".

3. Swap chairs

Anyone to whom the statement applies must stand up and quickly swap chairs. The person in the middle tries to grab one of the empty chairs.

The last person left without a chair becomes the next person in the middle.

What it teaches

  • Listening and reaction skills
  • Awareness of self and others
  • Quick decision-making
  • Turn-taking
  • Confidence in leading

Principal's notes

Remind children to move safely and be aware of others when swapping chairs! Encourage inclusive statements that apply to several people to keep the game flowing. This game works well as an energiser and helps build group cohesion.
