Child development / Drama games / Shout for a sprout

Shout for a Sprout is a lively drama game where children practise clear speech, articulation and voice projection while moving and role-playing.

By announcing themselves loudly and clearly to enter the party, children develop confidence, vocal control and expressive communication skills.

How to play

1. Set up the room

Split the room into two halves. Explain that one half is the party and the other half is outside the party.

2. Introduce the rules

Tell the children they must announce themselves at the door before being let in. Explain that the doorman has cotton wool in his ears, so they must speak clearly and loudly.

3. Assign names

When a child reaches the door, they must say their first name followed by a fruit or vegetable as their surname, for example:

  • "Hello, my name is Anna Cabbage."
  • "Hello, my name is Chris Sprout."

4. Check clarity

The adult playing the doorman pretends not to hear unless the child speaks clearly and loudly enough.

5. Enter the party

Once inside, the party space becomes a disco with children dancing and celebrating. Continue until everyone has made it into the party.

What it teaches

  • Projection
  • Articulation
  • Confidence
  • Speaking clearly to be understood

Variations to try

  • Ask children to introduce themselves using different emotions.
  • Swap roles so children take turns being the doorman.
  • Add a short follow-up sentence once inside the party.

Principal's notes

This lively game gives children a clear reason to project and articulate. The playful setup helps them understand that being heard isn't about shouting - it's about clarity, confidence and strong voice use.
