By venturing out of the safety of the Den and responding to "danger," they explore suspense, teamwork and creative play.
1. Set up the Den
Establish a "Den" in one corner of the room. You may use a mat, but check carefully for slipping hazards.
Explain that the Den is safe but is surrounded by a dangerous zone, such as a jungle, space or desert!
2. Explain the goal
Tell the children they need to find food to survive.
3. Volunteer to fetch food
Ask for a volunteer to leave the Den. Before they go, they must say what food they are going to find.
4. React to danger
As the child ventures out, if you see danger, everyone shouts "Back to the Den!" until the child returns safely.
5. Repeat and keep suspense
Play with about three different players, one at a time, maintaining excitement and suspense throughout the game.
I originally developed this game to play at home to engage my toddler son whilst I was looking after my newborn. It was a hit with him, so I developed it further for the class and a larger group of children. The children love the drama of pretending to be in danger and rushing back to safety together. It also encourages imagination and bravery, while giving the whole group a chance to support the individual player.
