Number Run

Perform 4-7s child

Number Run is a fast-paced, energetic game where children practise number sequencing and recall while running and moving around.

Each child is assigned a number and must call it out in order when the game stops, then sit down or line up correctly.

This energetic activity builds number confidence and teamwork while keeping kids active and engaged.

How to play

1. Count the group

Begin by counting how many children are in the group together. For example: "There are 15 of us!"

2. Chant the numbers

As a group, count up to that number quickly: "1, 2, 3" all the way to 15!

Make it fast and fun like a countdown challenge.

3. Assign numbers

Give each child a number from 1 upwards - make sure each child knows and remembers their number!

4. Let them run!

Ask the children to run around the space, keeping an eye out for others and moving freely.

5. Freeze and number call

Shout: "STOP!"

Then explain: "Starting with number 1, you're going to shout out your number in order and sit down straight after!"

Let each child call out their number in turn:

"1!" (sits down)

"2!" (sits down)

... and so on.

6. Try it again - with a twist!

Now ask them to run again. This time, when you stop them, they must arrange themselves in a line in the correct number order - from 1 to the highest number.

7. Final round- circle challenge

For a third go, they must form a circle in number order, standing side by side, 1 next to 2, 2 next to 3 and so on. Encourage teamwork to help each other get in the right place.

What it teaches

  • Number recognition and sequencing - knowing and remembering place in order
  • Listening and following instructions - reacting quickly to commands
  • Memory - recalling number assignments and those of peers
  • Cooperation and teamwork - helping others form the correct shape
  • Spatial awareness - forming shapes together and navigating space

Variations to try

  • Backwards numbers: Call out numbers from highest to lowest
  • Even/Odd split: Group into odds and evens before sequencing
  • Shape twist: Form other shapes in order- zigzags, spirals or numbers!

Principal's notes

This game is full of energy and excitement. It's a brilliant way to get children thinking about number order while building group connection and a strong sense of fun.
