One Word Stories is a collaborative storytelling game where children create a story together, one word at a time.

By listening carefully and contributing thoughtfully, they practise communication, creativity and group cooperation.

Perform 7-12 child

How to play

1. Sit in a circle

Ask the children to sit in a circle. Explain that together you are going to make up a story, with each child adding just one word when it is their turn.

2. Start the story

You may begin by giving a theme or subject, but remind the children to say only one word each time.

3. Build the story

Go around the circle, taking turns to add one word at a time. Encourage everyone to listen carefully so the story makes sense!

4. Finish the story

Continue until the story reaches a natural ending.

What it teaches

  • Listening
  • Turn-taking
  • Creativity
  • Sentence structure
  • Teamwork

Variations to try

  • Add a rule that words must be said without pausing.
  • Restart if someone says more than one word.
  • Change direction halfway through the circle.

Principal's notes

This simple storytelling game is excellent for developing listening and collaboration. Children learn that every contribution matters and that strong stories come from working together.
