By turning simple movement into a challenge, this activity builds coordination, problem-solving and imaginative movement while encouraging children to think creatively about how their bodies can move.
1. Set the challenge
Explain that the aim is to get from one side of the room to the other. Ask the group: "Is it hard or easy to cross the room?"
When they say "easy", reply: "I do not like easy. Let's make it interesting!"
2. Change how they move
Tell the children they are not allowed to walk normally. They must use only certain body parts to travel across the space.
Give the first challenge, for example: "Everyone, cross the room using only your heels."
Or: "Everyone cross using only your fingers and toes."
3. Explore and experiment
Let the children experiment with different ways to move, encouraging slow, careful movement and problem-solving.
Repeat with new body part combinations to keep the challenge fresh.
4. Let children suggest ideas
Invite the children to suggest their own body part combinations for the group to try. Choose a few and test them together.
This game is fun, physical and encourages problem solving. Make sure the floor is safe and clear and encourage children to move slowly when exploring unusual ways of travelling!
