Ghost Hour

Children in drama class

Ghost Hour is a quiet, imaginative movement game where children practise controlled, noiseless dancing around the room.

By focusing on gentle steps and careful movement, they develop body awareness, balance and concentration.

How to play

1. Explain and demonstrate

Tell the children that the aim is to move as quietly as possible. Demonstrate the difference between noisy and gentle, controlled movement.

2. Spread out

Ask the children to spread out around the room while you sit in the middle with your eyes closed.

3. Start moving

Children dance noiselessly around the space. Encourage them to focus on gentle, light steps and to use their whole body, not just creep along.

4. Use imaginative focus

Give optional imaginative prompts, such as dancing through a forest, moving over and under branches, or leading with different body parts.

5. Spot and pause

If you hear a noise, clap your hands. Children must stop immediately. Point to the child responsible; they sit out and watch quietly.

6. Continue and finish

Repeat until only a few dancers remain or for a set amount of time.

Principal's notes

This game develops exceptional body awareness and control. Children learn that stillness and silence require focus and intention, making it a valuable exercise for concentration and physical discipline.
