1. Introduce news headlines
Talk to the children about newspapers and exciting headlines. Demonstrate how a news seller might call out, "Extra, extra, read all about it!"
2. Share some examples
Give the children a few funny or imaginative examples, such as "Perform teacher had a ham sandwich for lunch!" Encourage the children to think of something they have done or something exciting that has happened in their life.
3. Create and perform
Ask each child to come up with their own headline. One at a time, invite the children to step forward and shout their headline clearly and dramatically, as though they are selling newspapers in the street.
4. Encourage expression
Remind the children to use strong voices, clear words and lots of energy to make their headlines exciting and entertaining. Celebrate everyone's ideas and performances.
Children love the humour and drama of pretending to be newspaper sellers. Encourage bold vocal choices and lots of expression. The sillier the headlines become, the more relaxed and confident children usually feel about performing in front of others.
