Bringing Midnight in the Toyshop to the West End stage

Bringing Midnight in the Toyshop to the West End stage

Perform Productions is thrilled to bring Midnight in the Toyshop to the West End this April at London's St Martin's Theatre, the historic home of The Mousetrap, from 7-12th April.

Following the same story as what our 4-7s have been rehearsing in class, this production will be performed by professional West End actors. This gives the children the special experience of watching the story as a fully realised piece of theatre.

Live theatre helps children understand storytelling, character and performance in a way that feels exciting and aspirational.

For many families, it will be a child's first experience of live theatre too, as the 1-hour length makes it more manageable.

A story about toys, magic and modern childhood

Midnight in the Toyshop is set in a traditional toyshop. The kind many of us remember from our own childhoods. There are shelves full of dolls, trains, jack-in-the-boxes, teddy bears and wind-up toys.

But the toyshop is under threat, because tech tycoon Peyton Pixel wants to close it down and replace it with an AI centre.

When the shop closes for the night, the toys come to life. They gather, argue, plan and ultimately decide that real children still need real toys. Not just devices, apps and algorithms, but objects they can hold, imagine with and bring to life themselves.

Together, the toys set about trying to save the toyshop and remind the world what play really means.

For younger children, this idea feels instinctively right. The belief that toys have secret lives, feelings and personalities mirrors exactly how they already play.

Holding on to what matters

Midnight in the Toyshop is a reminder that while technology will continue to develop, we must protect the spaces where young children can explore and play freely - because real children still need real toys!
