When I Grow Up

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / When i grow up

This simple circle game encourages children to think about what they might like to do in the future while practising public speaking.

It helps build confidence, supports turn-taking and gives children a safe opportunity to share their ideas with the group.

How to play

1. Sit in a circle and think

Gather the children and ask them to quietly imagine what they want to be when they grow up.

2. Share with a strong voice

Go around the circle and invite each child to say, "When I grow up, I want to be..." Encourage them to speak clearly and, if appropriate, add "because..." to explain why.

3. Support and celebrate

Offer help with examples or sentence starters for those who need it and celebrate every response, reminding the group that all ideas are unique and important.

What it teaches

  • Speaking in full sentences
  • Confidence when talking in a group
  • Listening and turn-taking
  • Self-expression and aspiration
  • Clear communication of ideas

Variations to try

  • Ask children to add an action or mime to show their future job.
  • Ask the group to guess the job after hearing the reason.
  • Pair children up to share their ideas before speaking to the whole group.
  • For older children, ask how their chosen job helps other people.

Principal's notes

This game is deceptively powerful. Some children will answer quickly, while others may need time or reassurance. Avoid correcting or questioning choices and instead focus on encouraging clear speech and confidence.
