Slow Count to 20

Perform 7-12 child

Slow Count to 20 is a quiet but challenging group game where children work together to count aloud without overlapping.

It encourages deep listening, patience and non-verbal teamwork, making it perfect for focus-building at the start or end of a session.

This activity strengthens concentration, timing and ensemble connection.

How to play

1. Circle up

Ask the group to stand in a circle. For an extra challenge, have them turn slightly away so they cannot see each other.

2. Set the challenge

Together, they must count from 1 to 20, one number at a time, in random order.

No patterns or signals are allowed; anyone can speak at any moment.

3. The rule

If two or more children say a number at the same time, the group must start again at 1.

4. Encourage calm focus

Begin by saying "One" yourself to start the flow.

After each round, celebrate how far they got and encourage them to aim higher next time.

What it teaches

  • Collective focus and mindfulness
  • Listening and timing
  • Teamwork without words
  • Patience and group synergy

Variations to try

  • Add a 'no eye contact' rule
  • Try it sitting or lying down for calm-down sessions
  • Use background music to increase the challenge
