Child development / Drama games / Magic chairs

Magic Chairs is a fun and imaginative drama game where children take turns sitting in a "magic chair" and reacting to different types of enchanted dust.

Whether giggling, jumping, crying, or shouting, this game encourages creative thinking, role play and playful physical expression.

Perform 4-7s child

How to play

1. Introduce the chair

Tell the children you have a magic chair and show it to them.

2. Set up a helper

Ask another adult or volunteer to stand in the corner and cover their ears, pretending not to hear.

3. Add the magic

Whisper to the children that you are putting special "dust" or "powder" on the chair.

For example, giggle dust, and when another adult sits down, they giggle uncontrollably.

4. Try different powders

Repeat with other types of magic dust or powder, such as crying dust, jumping powder, shouting dust, etc.

5. Invite the children

Let the children suggest their own kinds of magic dust.

Have everyone sit in the chair one by one, reacting appropriately to the magic.

What it teaches

  • Fuels imagination
  • Role play
  • Creative thinking
  • Group participation

Variations to try

  • Play "Opposite Dust" where children must do the opposite reaction (e.g. "sleepy dust" makes them jumpy).
  • Use sound effects or music to add atmosphere.

Principal's notes

I love this game because it blends imagination with humour. Children love seeing the adults take part, and it gives them confidence to suggest their own ideas. It's a simple but effective way to spark creativity and group laughter, and it works particularly well with younger children - and is a fun party game too.
