Magic Cauldron

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Magic cauldron

Magic Cauldron is an imaginative drama game where children take part in creating a magical potion and transforming into animals.

By using their imagination and full-body movement, they explore creativity, role-play and expressive physicality.

Perform 4-7s child

How to play

1. Introduce the story

Introduce yourself as a Witch or Wizard and explain that you need help making a magic potion that will let children transform into any animal they wish.

2. Form a circle

Ask the children to kneel around your Magic Cauldron.

3. Create a spell

Together, invent a magical spell word.

4. Add ingredients

One by one, each child adds an imaginary ingredient into the cauldron while saying the spell word.

5. Transform

Pretend crystal goblets are lowered from above. Everyone drinks, then gradually let their feet, legs and whole bodies wiggle until they fully transform into their chosen animal.

What it teaches

  • Fuels creativity
  • Role play
  • Characterisation
  • Group storytelling

Variations to try

  • Ask for silly ingredients (dragon's toenail, fairy dust, spaghetti worms).
  • Instead of animals, make potions that give children superhero powers.

Principal's notes

This is a highly dramatic game that children love because it combines magic, imagination and transformation. Lean into your character as the Witch or Wizard, as the more theatrical you are, the more fun it becomes. It's brilliant for encouraging children to be creative with ideas and to throw themselves into physical role play.
