Across the Fence

Children in drama class
Child development / Drama games / Across the fence

Across the Fence is a fun speaking and listening game where children practise projecting their voices while having a conversation.

By gradually increasing the distance between partners, they learn to speak clearly and confidently without shouting.

How to play

1. Form lines

Ask the children to stand in two lines facing each other, fairly close together, with a partner opposite them.

2. Start the conversation

Give each pair an easy topic, such as what they did at the weekend or their favourite animal and let them start talking.

3. Step back

Get their attention by clapping or calling "Stop" and ask both lines to take a few steps backwards.

4. Project your voice

Tell the children to continue their conversation, reminding them to make their voices clear and project so their partner can hear without shouting.

5. Repeat and reflect

Continue stepping back every minute until it becomes hard to hear. Stop and reflect together on how projecting changes the way we communicate.

What it teaches

  • Projection
  • Clear speaking
  • Listening
  • Understanding how voices travel

Variations to try

  • Change the topic of conversation.
  • Ask children to face a different direction and project across the space.
  • Let the audience comment on which voices were easiest to hear.

Principal's notes

This game helps children feel the difference between shouting and projecting. By increasing the distance gradually, they learn how to use their voice clearly and confidently without straining or yelling - key for our junior actors and a skill that is brilliant for life.
