Step into a time capsule and explore the events, people and places that shaped our world. Our curriculum-linked drama workshops transport children to key moments in history, helping them understand the past through imagination, empathy and play.

Led by experienced facilitators, each session combines storytelling, role-play, music and movement to spark curiosity, deepen understanding and make learning unforgettable. From the Life in Tudor Times to the lives of Mary Seacole and children during Victorian times, these immersive workshops bring history off the page and into the classroom.

Mary Seacole

Teacher

Step into the past and journey with Tina or Tony the Time Capsule Explorer as they uncover the incredible true story of Mary Seacole, a brave nurse, traveller and healer who helped soldiers during the Crimean War.

Children will sail across seas, march as soldiers, mix up magical remedies, and celebrate a woman who made history but wasn?t always remembered. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Travel back in time and meet real historical figures
  • Recreate Mary Seacole?s journeys across the world
  • Train like soldiers and experience life near a battlefield
  • Create a magical cauldron of natural remedies just like Mary

Learning objectives:

  • Learn about Mary Seacole?s role during the Crimean War
  • Explore the challenges Mary faced and the choices she made
  • Understand how people in history made a difference, even when not recognised

Please note, this workshop can be adapted to suit KS1 and can also be combined with our Florence Nightingale workshop, to celebrate the Nurses of the Crimean War.

Life in Tudor Times

Step back in time and discover the colourful world of the Tudors! From royal feasts to rebellious queens, this interactive drama workshop explores the lives of the rich and poor, the impact of monarchs like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and the magic of Shakespeare's stage.

Packed with lively games, freeze frames, debates, and dances, this workshop brings Tudor history to life in unforgettable ways. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Recreate key moments from the reigns of Tudor monarchs in dramatic freeze frames and scenes
  • Compare the daily lives of rich and poor people in Tudor England through movement and roleplay
  • Debate the creation of the Church of England and religious divisions between Catholic and Protestant rulers
  • Explore the world of Tudor theatre through energetic stage games and Shakespearean storytelling

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the chronological order and significance of Tudor monarchs
  • Identify key differences between the lives of the rich and poor in Tudor England
  • Develop confidence in speaking, collaboration and storytelling through drama

Vikings vs Anglo Saxons

Great Fire

Step into the world of warriors, gods, and invaders as we explore the rise of the Anglo-Saxons and the arrival of the Vikings! Through interactive drama, freeze frames, character games and epic myth re-tellings, children will uncover how these powerful tribes shaped the land we now call England.

Expect invading games, thunder gods, and dramatic showdowns between clans. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Bring history to life by becoming warriors, farmers, gods and kings
  • Use their bodies to create Anglo-Saxon objects in freeze frames
  • Recreate scenes from Viking myths, including the hilarious wedding of Thor
  • Explore communication without language and the clash of cultures

Learning objectives:

  • Understand key historical facts about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and their impact on England
  • Experience historical concepts such as invasion, hierarchy, and daily life through roleplay
  • Develop teamwork, communication, and storytelling skills through improvisation and scene creation

Life for Victorian Children

Step back in time and experience the grit, grime, and grandeur of the Victorian era! In this fast-paced, interactive drama workshop, children explore the everyday lives of Victorian children, from the dirty jobs they worked to the royal family that ruled over them.

With role-play, historical storytelling, and Music Hall fun, this workshop reveals how much Britain has changed?and what still connects us to the past. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Take on the roles of Victorian children in jobs like chimney sweeping, oakum picking and more
  • Create freeze-frames of key moments in Queen Victoria?s life and family
  • Build a workhouse scene and take part in a story circle to change the law
  • Explore Victorian inventions, seaside entertainment and quirky language

Learning objectives:

  • To compare Victorian childhood with modern life, including school and work
  • To understand the significance of Queen Victoria and her reign
  • To explore social change and the beginnings of education for all children

World War I

Step into history with this immersive drama workshop exploring the causes, consequences, and lived experiences of the First and Second World Wars.

From the assassination that sparked a global conflict to trench life and propaganda, children will take on roles, debate, sing, and even film their own mock documentary segments. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Take on the roles of global leaders and explain their country's actions in a 'live' WW1 news report
  • Re-enact recruitment songs and contrast them with the grim realities of trench warfare
  • Collaborate to create propaganda-style adverts from opposing perspectives
  • Explore the link between WW1's ending and the causes of WW2 through discussion and improvisation

  • Understand the causes, timeline, and outcomes of the First World War
  • Explore the experiences of soldiers and civilians during wartime through roleplay
  • Develop critical thinking by comparing recruitment messaging with historical realities

World War II

Step into the shoes of evacuees, Prime Ministers, gossips at the bus stop and brave soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy. In this powerful and immersive drama workshop, children experience the fears, courage and resilience of those who lived through the Second World War.

From rationing and gas masks to street parties and the Blitz, history comes alive through character-driven storytelling and imaginative role play. The children will:

  • Take part in historical improvisations based on real WW2 experiences including evacuation and air raids
  • Explore how entertainment and community spirit supported those at war and on the home front
  • Learn about rationing, D-Day and VE Day through physical theatre and collaborative scenes
  • Create freeze-frames and character conversations reflecting different perspectives during the war

Learning objectives:

  • Understand key historical events and consequences of WW2 including evacuation, air raids and D-Day
  • Explore the emotional impact of war through character and empathy-based drama activities
  • Develop speaking and listening skills through storytelling, improvisation and role play

Step into sandals, raise your shields and travel back in time to the mighty Roman Empire! In this action packed drama workshop, children become soldiers, senators, gods and goddesses as they discover how Roman innovations still shape our lives today.

Full of games, debates and dramatic storytelling, this workshop brings history roaring to life. Children will:

  • March as Roman soldiers and master Roman army formations
  • Explore the legacy of Roman inventions through creative team tasks
  • Debate as Celts and Romans in the invasion of Britain
  • Bring Roman emperors to life with character-based performance

The Magna Carta

Step into the shoes of brave barons and defiant villagers in this thrilling, time-travelling drama adventure! Journey back to 1215 and help Bobby the Baron convince King John to sign a scroll that will change the course of history forever.

With songs, games, and courtroom clashes, children will explore justice, fairness, and the birth of democracy. They will:

  • Travel in a magical Time Capsule to King John's castle in 1215
  • Recreate powerful freeze frames showing unfair rule and rebellion
  • Take part in the dramatic signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede
  • Learn and perform a protest song about life under King John

Learning objectives:

  • Understand why the Magna Carta is such a significant historical document
  • Explore the concepts of fairness, justice and democracy through drama
  • Learn how the actions of people in the past helped shape our laws today

The Georgians

In this lively drama workshop, children become documentary presenters, factory workers and Georgian citizens as they uncover the incredible transformations that shaped Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Packed with roleplay, games, soundscapes and storytelling, this session brings history to life in a hands-on, unforgettable way. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Create freeze-frames, soundscapes and persuasive Georgian-era TV adverts

The Battle of Hastings

Step back in time to 1066 and experience one of the most famous battles in history! Through exciting drama activities, children will bring the story of the Battle of Hastings to life, learning about the key figures, fierce battles and medieval life.

This workshop combines storytelling, role-play and creative movement to engage children in history like never before. Through interactive drama, children will:

  • Explore key characters like William the Conqueror, Harold Goodwinson, and Viking invaders through movement and role-play
  • Recreate the famous Bayeux Tapestry using freeze frames to visually tell the story of the battle
  • Develop persuasive speaking skills by acting out historical adverts and news reports from the time
  • Learn about medieval life and weapons through fun, active command games
