Lucy's tips

Lucy

Six months

Physically your baby is coming on in leaps and bounds. You may find that they are able to sit up without support, but it's best to be close at hand to prevent them from toppling over. Their legs are also much stronger now - you'll probably find that if you support your baby under their arms whilst letting them balance their feet on your thighs they'll bounce up and down - it was a favourite game for my two!

Your baby's probably experimenting more and more with language now and will probably have a favourite sound which they like to repeat over and over. Blowing raspberries is also a popular past-time right now!

Emotionally your baby is also developing. At around five months babies begin to be able to express love via hugs and kisses - and unfortunately, sometimes tears when you leave. This can be heartbreaking - particularly when you're off out for the evening for the first time in ages! Remember it's important for you to have your own life too - so don't allow your little one to guilt trip you into not going.

More positively, your baby's emotional development will mean that they are really beginning to understand humour. Pulling funny faces, talking in silly voices etc are really fun ways to pass the time. You may also find your baby trying to copy you and make you laugh too.

Play & Pretend

At around five months babies begin to understand something called object permanence. This means that they begin to understand that something is still there, even if they can't see it.

Try this Mini Ps game - it's a great way to help them understand this concept.
